1961Jun 1Commissioned with CDR. C. N. Mitchell in command.
 Jun 8Sculpin departed Pascagoula, MS. for her designated home port, San Diego, CA.. Following her arrival there, she began a period of shakedown training.
 Jul 1Sculpin held special trials and tests in the Puget Sound area and then returned to San Diego, CA. for type training.
 Aug 1Sculpin cruised to Pearl Harbor, HI. for two weeks before returning to San Diego, CA.
 Oct 1Sculpin operated off the West Coast before entering the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA., for post-shakedown availability. This was completed in late March 1962, and Sculpin returned to her home port.
1962May 1Following training operations, Sculpin departed for the western Pacific.
 Aug 1Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. She participated in local training operations, ordnance evaluation projects, and fleet exercises.
1963Jan 1Sculpin entered the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, Ca. for a hull survey.
 Jan 31Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. and conducted type training for 2 months.
 Mar 29Sculpin got underway for a dependent's cruise.
 Apr 1Sculpin returned to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. for restricted availability.
 Aug 1Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. and commenced local operations.
 Dec 1Sculpin was in Pearl Harbor, HI., enroute to the western Pacific, when defective piping forced her to sail back to the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. for repairs.
1964Feb 25Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA., and operated from that port until early April.
 Apr 8Sculpin sailed for duty with the Seventh Fleet. Prior to reporting, she made port calls at Pearl Harbor, HI., Sydney, Australia and Subic Bay, Philippines.. For the remainder of her deployment, Sculpin operated in and out of Subic Bay, and Naha, Okinawa.
 Oct 20Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. and was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for her deployment. Operations and exercises along the west coast, from San Diego, CA. to Bangor, WA., occupied the submarine for the next 25 months.
1966Nov 27Sculpin stood out of San Diego, CA. for Naha, Okinawa and another tour with the Seventh Fleet.
1967May 11Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. and began conducting local operations.
 Jul 27Sculpin had an extended training cruise from 27 July to 26 October.
 Nov 11Sculpin gave a demonstration dive for President Lyndon B. Johnson.
1968Jan 2Sculpin sailed to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA. for overhaul. This was Sculpin’s first major overhaul and refueling since commissioning, seven years before, and she was in drydock from 30 January 1968 to 22 January 1969.
1969Jul 26Sea trials and training lasted until 26 July when Sculpin sailed to Pearl Harbor, HI. on a shakedown training cruise.
 Aug 22Sculpin returned to the West Coast and began an upkeep period at San Diego which lasted until 8 September.
1970Feb 6Sculpin got underway for Pearl Harbor, HI. and deployment to the western Pacific.
 Feb 21Sculpin sailed from Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Mar 6Sculpin entered Buckner Bay, Okinawa. She also visited Subic Bay, Philippines, Hong Kong, China and Yokosuka, Japan.
 Aug 21Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. and conducted local operations.
1971Jan 4Sculpin began a three month restricted availability period at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.
 Apr 16The yard work was completed, and Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. The only interruption of her schedule came in October when she sailed to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremwerton, WA. to have her bottom sand blasted and painted.
 Nov 13Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA. and began preparing for another deployment period.
1972Jan 5Sculpin departed San Diego, CA. for a deployment.
 Jul 24Sculpin returned to San Diego, CA., where she was berthed for the remainder of the year, with only 15 days being spent at sea.
1973Feb 2Sculpin entered the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. for a three month restricted availability.
 May 1After leaving the yard in May, the submarine operated along the Pacific coast.
 Nov 12Sculpin arrived at San Diego, CA. and began preparing for a deployment.
1974Jan 7Sculpin sailed from San Diego, CA. for Pearl Harbor, HI. and the western Pacific on an extended cruise.
1982Apr 5Underwent unplanned depth excursion, achieving steepest angle ever achieved by a nuclear submarine, and surviving. (official report lists angle as >75 degrees) Lost the bubble in the inclinometer.In transit from Mare Island, CA. to San Diego, CA. Inju
1990Aug 3Decommissioned at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, VA. with ceremonies occurring at Norfolk Naval Base prior to the shipyard event.
 Aug 30Struck from the Naval Register.
2000Oct 1Sculpin entered the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA., and on 30 October 2001 ceased to exist.
