1942Dec 7Keel laid down by the Electric Boat Co., Groton, CT.
1943Aug 8Launched.
 Nov 11Commissioned with LCDR. Eric L. Barr, Jr. in command.
1944Apr 1Began war operations, completed 6 war partols from New Guinea to Farmosa and South China and Java Seas.
 Apr 27Sank the light cruiser Yubari along with 9 other Japanese vessels and a submarine chaser during the war.
1945May 29Raised the American flag on Pratas Island after finding the island evacuated by a Japanese Naval Garrison.
1946Mar 1Placed "Out of Commission, In Reserve" at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.
1951May 3Recommissioned and reported to the Pacific Fleet for training duty.
1952Jul 7Bluegill was placed "Out of Commission, In Reserve" and converted to a "hunter-killer" submarine (SSK).
1953May 2Recommissioned and classified as SSK-242.
1969Jun 28Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register.
1971Jan 1Bluegill was sunk and moored to the bottom as a salvage trainer about two kilometers off Lahaina in 40 metres of water. For the next 13 years, her hull was used for underwater rescue training.
1984Nov 1After a month of preparatory work, the twin Edenton-class salvage and rescue ships Beaufort (ATS-2) and Brunswick (ATS-3) raised Bluegill and towed her to deep water where she was sunk with military honors.
