1953Dec 8Keel laid down by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME.
1955Sep 8Launched.
1956Apr 14Commissioned with LCDR. S. R. McCord in command. Sailfish was the first submarine built expressly for radar picket service. She and sister ship, Salmon (SSR-573), were also the largest conventionally powered submarines in the US Navy.
 Apr 14(Cont'd.) Following trials off the New Hampshire coast, Sailfish conducted a shakedown cruise in the Caribbean Sea before joining Submarine Squadron 6 at Norfolk, VA.
1957Jul 1Sailfish began her 1st extended deployment with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
 Oct 1Sailfish returned to Norfolk, VA. and, through the fall of 1958, engaged in local operations, with occasional visits to Caribbean ports.
1958Dec 1Sailfish commenced a seven month conversion and overhaul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME.
1959Apr 1Sailfish was reassigned to SubRon 10, New London, CT.
1960Jul 1Sailfish resumed coastal operations out of New London, CT., participating in Fleet and NATO exercises, providing qualification training for prospective submarine officers and crews, and sharpening her own battle readiness.
1961Feb 3Sailfish was reclassified as SS-572, and assumed the duties of an attack submarine.
1962Oct 10Sailfish departed New London, CT. for her second Mediterranean deployment. She operated with Sixth Fleet over the next four months.
1963Feb 1Sailfish returned to New London, CT., where she participated in local operations through the rest of that year and 1964.
1965Jan 1Sailfish entered the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, PA. for extensive "FRAM II" conversion.
1966Feb 1Sailfish left the navy yard presenting a more sleek, streamlined appearance, broken only by the deck mounted fins of the new "puffs" sonar system.
1967Nov 1Sailfish was assigned to SubRon 8 and joined the submarines of Submarine Division 82, specialists in antisubmarine warfare, operating out of New London, CT.
1969Jul 14After overhaul, Sailfish departed New London, CT. for reassignement to Pearl Harbor, HI. She transited the Panama Canal; and, after a brief visit to Acapulco, Mexico, proceeded to Hawaii.
 Oct 9Sailfish deployed with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific, operating out of Yokosuka, Japan.
1970Jan 1Sailfish participated in Allied exercises off Taiwan and Okinawa.
 Feb 1Sailfish conducted joint training operations with units of the Navy of the Republic of Korea.
 Mar 1Sailfish operated with units of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
 May 26Sailfish returned to Pearl Harbor. HI. and spent the remainder of the year there in training operations and upkeep.
1971Feb 8Sailfish departed Pearl Harbor HI. for her 2nd WestPac deployment. She cruised the Western Pacific, joining units of the US Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force in HUK ASWEX 3-71.
 Aug 28Sailfish spent a week in Brisbane, Australia, before returning to Pearl Harbor, HI., for overhaul.
1972Jul 14Between July and December, Sailfish operated between Hawaii and the California coast, engaged in trials and type training.
 Dec 1Sailfish departed San Diego, CA. for Yokosuka, Japan for her 3rd WestPac cruise.
1973May 4Sailfisah departed Subic Bay to return the the US, and spent the rest of the year operating off the California coast out of San Diego, CA.
1978Sep 29Sailfish was decommissioned.
 Sep 30Struck from the Naval Register.
2007May 1The ex-Sailfish was disposed of in support of a Fleet training exercise.
