May 8Tullibee departed for Pearl Harbor, HI.
May 15Tullibee arrived at Pearl Harbor, HI. and and held further training exercises in Hawaiian waters. Numerous air fitting leaks developed, and she was docked for repairs twice. When this proved ineffective, the submarine entered the navy yard until 11 July.
Jul 19Tullibee got underway for the Western Caroline Islands and her 1st war patrol.
Jul 28Tullibee sighted a passenger-cargo ship, accompanied by an escort and an aircraft that prevented her attack.
Aug 5Tullibee began patrolling the Saipan-Truk traffic lanes.
Aug 10She sighted smoke on the horizon that proved to be 3 freighters with an escort. Tullibee closed the range to 2,700 yards and fired 1 torpedo at the ship on the right and 3 at the vessel on the left. None of the torpedoes exploded.
Aug 14Tullibee sighted a convoy of 3 freighters with an escort. She fired a torpedo from a range of 3,000 yards. It missed, and she returned to periscope depth to fire 3 torpedoes at the last ship. When she surfaced, the targets had escaped.
Aug 22Tullibee sighted a convoy of 5 ships escorted by 2 destroyers. She fired 3 torpedoes at the nearest freighter. 2 minutes later, she fired 3 more at another ship. She heard one explosion. She soon heard the bursts of 2 more torpedoes.
Sep 6The patrol terminated when the Tullibee reached Midway Island. Postwar examination of Japanese records indicated that Tullibee had damaged 1 freighter and had sunk the passenger-cargo ship Kaisho Maru.
Sep 28Tullibee began her 2nd war patrol. Her assigned area was in the East China Sea between the Ryukyu Islands and the China coast.
Oct 4Tullibee sighted a convoy of passenger-cargo ships with 3 destroyer escorts. Tullibee pulled well ahead of the convoy and tracked them until the next morning.
Oct 5Tullibee fired a spread of 3 torpedoes at a large freighter. Another spread of 3 from the bow tubes produced 2 hits on a heavily laden cargo ship. Minor explosions and breaking up noises began immediately as Chicago Maru sank.
Oct 17Tullibee contacted a convoy of 7 ships with 3 escorts that later separated into 2 groups. One hugging the China coast and the other heading for Pescadores Channel. She attacked the largest ship in the last group with 6 torpedoes.
Oct 17(Cont'd.) Tullibee began an end-around run and fired 4 torpedoes at another ship. 2 torpedoes soon broached, and Tullibee broke off the attack. She went deep and rigged for silent running to evade the escorts.
Nov 5Tullibee was running submerged near Okinoyerabu Shima when she sighted a large, three-story building on the island. She surfaced and fired 55 shells into the barracks before retiring at full speed.
Nov 6She began the voyage back to Hawaii via Midway Island. Her official score for this patrol was 1 passenger-cargo ship sunk, a tanker damaged, and a passenger-cargo ship damaged.
Nov 16Tullibee arrived at Pearl Harbor, HI.
Dec 14Tullibee’s 3rd war patrol was in a wolf pack with sister ships Halibut (SS-232) and Haddock (SS-231). The trio sortied from Pearl Harbor, HI. for the Mariana Islands to intercept enemy shipping plying between Truk and Japan.
1944Jan 2Tullibee sighted a Japanese I class submarine on the surface and fired 4 torpedoes. The enemy saw the wakes and combed the 4 of them as Tullibee was forced deep by an enemy floatplane that dropped 6 bombs.
Jan 19Haddock reported that she had damaged the Japanese escort carrier Unyo, which limped to Saipan, Mariana Island.
Jan 25Tullibee sighted the carrier there, close ashore and well protected by escorts and aircraft. The submarine remained on station for several days awaiting an opportunity to sink the aircraft carrier.
Jan 28However, when Tullibee surfaced, she learned that the carrier had slipped away.
Jan 31Tullibee made radar contact with 2 targets. She fired 3 torpedoes at a freighter and fired 1 at the escort. The first target, net tender Hiro Maru, took 2 hits and disintegrated in about 1 minute. The torpedo fired at the escort missed.
Feb 10Tullibee returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
Mar 5Tullibee stood out of Pearl Harbor, HI. to begin her 4th war patrol.
Mar 14Tullibee called at Midway Island to top off her fuel and then proceeded to her patrol area in the Palau Islands. She was scheduled to support aircraft carrier strikes against those islands on 30 March and 31 March.
Mar 25Tullibee arrived on station and began patrolling.
Mar 26(Cont'd) About 2 minutes later, the submarine was rocked by a violent explosion. Apparently, one of Tullibee’s own torpedoes ran a circular course and sank the submarine that had launched it. 79 men lost. 1 survived.
Mar 26Tullibee contacted a convoy consisting of a large passenger-cargo ship, 2 medium-sized freighters, a destroyer, and 2 other escorts. Tullibee fired 2 torpedoes from her bow tubes at the target.
Jul 29Struck from the Naval Register.
