1940Nov 4Keel laid by the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.
1941Aug 26Launched.
 Dec 15Commissioned with LCDR. Creed C. Burlingame in command. After shakedown off the California coast, Silversides set course for Hawaii.
1942Apr 4Silversides arrived at Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Apr 30Silversides departed Pearl Harbor, HI. on her 1st war patrol and headed for the Japanese home islands, in the area of Kii Suido.
 May 10Silversides heavily damaged a Japanese trawler with her 3 inch gun. During this 75 minute action, an enemy machine gun bullet killed one of her deck gunners, TM3 Mike Harbin, the only man to perish on the top deck of a submarine during World War II.
 May 17Silversides torpedoed and sank a 4000 ton cargo ship and damaged a second.
 Jun 21Silversides terminated her first patrol at Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Jul 15Silversides departed Pearl Harbor, HI. on her 2nd war patrol which was also conducted in the area of Kii Suido.
 Jul 28Silversides sank a 4000 ton transport.
 Aug 8Silversides sank the passenger-cargo ship Nikkei Maru.
 Aug 14Silversides scored damaging hits on a large tanker.
 Aug 31Silversides sank 2 enemy trawlers.
 Sep 8Silversides returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Sep 22Silversides departed Pearl Harbor HI. on her 3rd war patrol conducted in the Caroline Islands. Although there were no confirmed sinkings, she did severe damage to a large cargo ship and gained 2 observed torpedo hits on a Japanese destroyer.
 Nov 25Silversides terminated her 3rd patrol at Brisbane, Australia.
 Dec 17Departed Brisbane, Australia on her 4th war patrol and set course for New Ireland.
 Dec 24The submarine's pharmacist's mate, PM1 Thomas Moore, performed a successful emergency appendectomy on FM2 George Platter, using ether as anaesthesia and using rudimentary tools primarily fashioned from kitchen utensils.
1943Jan 18While off Truk, Silversides torpedoed and sank the tanker Toei Maru.
 Jan 20Silversides sank 3 enemy ships—the cargo ships Surabaya Maru, Somedono Maru, and Meiu Maru.
 Jan 31Silversides left the patrol area 2 days ahead of schedule and returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 May 17Silversides departed Pearl Harbor, HI. on her 5th war patrol which was conducted in the Solomon Islands area. Her primary mission was to lay a minefield in Steffan Strait, between New Hanover and New Ireland.
 Jun 11Silversides sank the 5,256 ton cargo ship Hide Maru.
 Jul 16Silversides returned to Brisbane, Australia for refit.
 Jul 21Silversides departed Brisbane, Australia on her 6th war patrol. She patrolled between the Solomons and the Carolines. Since she was plagued with malfunctioning torpedoes and a scarcity of targets, she returned to Brisbane empty handed.
 Sep 4Silversides returned to Brisbane, Australia.
 Oct 5Silversides departed Brisbane, Australia on her 7th war patrol.
 Oct 18Silversides torpedoed and sank the cargo ship Tairin Maru.
 Oct 24Silversides sent the cargo ships Tennan Maru and Kazan Maru and the passenger-cargo ship Johore Maru beneath the waves.
 Nov 8Silversides returned to Pearl Harbor, HI. for refit.
 Nov 22Silversides departed Pearl Harbor, HI. on her 8th war patrol.
 Dec 29Silversides brought havoc to an enemy convoy of cargo ships, sinking Tenposan Maru, Shichisei Maru, and Ryuto Maru
1944Jan 15Silversides terminated her 8th patrol at Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Feb 12Silversides returned to Midway Island.
 Feb 15Silversides departed Pearl Harbor, HI. on her 9th war patrol and set course for waters West of the Marianas Islands.
 Mar 16Silversides sank the cargo ship Kofuku Maru.
 Apr 8Silversides returned to Fremantle, Australia.
 Apr 22Silversides departed Fremantle, Australia on her 10th war patrol, again off the Marianas Islands.
 May 10Silversides torpedoed and sank the cargo ship Okinawa Maru, followed up with the passenger-cargo ship Mikage Maru; and then sent the converted gunboat Choan Maru Number Two to the bottom.
 May 20Silversides sank another converted gunboat, the 998 ton Shosei Maru.
 May 29Silversides torpedoed and sank the cargo ships Shoken Maru and Horaizan Maru.
 Sep 12Silversides returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Sep 24Silversides departed Pearl Harbor, HI. on her 11th war patrol off Kyushu, Japan.
 Nov 23Silversides terminated her 11th patrol at Midway Island.
 Dec 22Silversides departed Midway Island on her 12th war patrol, which was spent in the East China Sea.
1945Jan 25Silversides sank the 4,556 ton cargo ship Malay Maru.
 Mar 1Silversides departed Midway Island on her 13th war patrol. Silversides was a member of a coordinated attack group with submarines Hackleback (SS-295) and Threadfin (SS-410), patrolling off Kyushu.
 Apr 29Silversides returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 May 30Silversides departed Pearl Harbor on her 14th and final war patrol. This patrol was spent on lifeguard station in support of air strikes on Honshu, Japan.
 Jul 22Silversides rescued a downed fighter pilot from the light aircraft carrier Independence (CVL-22)
 Jul 24Silversides recovered a downed United States Army Air Corps airman.
 Jul 30Splversides ended this patrol at Apra Harbor, Guam. She was undergoing refit there when the hostilities with Japan ended on 15 August.
 Sep 15Silversides transited the Panama Canal.
 Sep 21Silversides arrived at New York City, NY.
1946Apr 17After shifting to New London, CT., Silversides was decommissioned and placed "In Reserve".
1947Oct 15Silversides was placed "In Service" as a training ship for Reservists in Chicago, IL. After a 1949 overhaul, she remained at Chicago for the rest of her service.
1962Nov 6Silversides was reclassified as an auxiliary submarine with hull classification symbol AGSS-236.
1969Jun 30Silversides was struck from the Naval Register. The South Chicago Chamber of Commerce applied to the Department of the Navy for custody of Silversides to preserve her as a memorial. During the mid-1980s, Silversides was docked at Chicago's Navy Pier.
1987Aug 7Silversides was moved tro Muskegon, MI. and is now a Museum boat there.
