 Feb 16After shakedown training at New London, CT., Gato departed for Pearl Harbor, HI. via the Panama Canal and San Francisco, CA.
 Apr 20Gato departed Pearl Harbor. HI. on her 1st war patrol.
 May 3Gato unsuccessfully attacked an converted aircraft carrier, before being driven away by the fierce depth charging of four destroyers off the Marshalls.
 May 24Gato was ordered to patrol the western approaches to Midway, taking station 280 miles westward during that historic victory.
 Jun 10Gato returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Jul 2Gato departed on her 2nd war patrol. She patrolled east of the Kurile Islands toward the Aleutian chain.
 Aug 15Gato obtained four torpedo hits with unconfirmed damage to a ship.
 Aug 29Gato terminated her patrol at Dutch Harbor, AK.
 Sep 23Gato's 3rd war patrol included operations off Kiska, then she steamed via Midway Island and Pearl Harbor, HI. to Truk atoll.
 Dec 6Gato's attack on a convoy was broken off by aerial bombs and a severe depth charge attack by three destroyers.
 Dec 23Gato terminated her patrol at Brisbane, Australia.
1943Jan 13Gato departed on her 4th war patrol.
 Jan 21Gato torpedoed and sank the transport ship Kenkon Maru.
 Jan 29Gato sank the cargo ship Nichiun Maru.
 Feb 15Gato sank the cargo ship Suruya Maru.
 Feb 26Gato terminated her patrol at Brisbane, Australia.
 Mar 19Gato departed on her 5th war patrol.
 Mar 29Gato landed an Australian Intelligence party at Toep, Bougainville, and evacuated 27 children, 9 mothers, and 3 nuns, transferring them 31 March to SC-531 off Ramos, Florida Island.
 Apr 4During a submerged radar attack approach between Tanga and Lihir Islands, she was shaken so violently by three exploding depth charges that she returned to Brisbane, Australia for temporary repairs 11 to 20 April.
 May 29GATO landed more Australian commandos at Toep Harbor, transported more evacuees to Ramos Island, and then reconnoitered off Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands.
 Jun 6Gato terminated her patrol at Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Jun 10Gato was routed onward to the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. for overhaul.
 Aug 22Gato returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Sep 6Gato departed on her 6th war patrol, onducted off Truk and Bougainville in the Solomon Islands.
 Oct 19Gato attacked a convoy, scoring hits for unknown damage to two large cargo ships.
 Oct 28Gato terminated her patrol at Brisbane. Australia.
 Nov 18Gato departed on her 7th war patrol which took her north of the Bismarck Archipelago.
 Nov 30Gato made a coordinated attack with Ray, sinking the cargo ship Columbia Maru..
 Dec 16Gato rescued a Japanese soldier from a life-raft.
 Dec 20Gato attacked a convoy in the Saipan-Massau traffic lanes to sink the cargo ship Tsuneshima Maru and scored damaging hits on another freighter.
1944Jan 10Gato concluded her patrol at Milne Bay, New Guinea.
 Feb 2Gato departed Milne Bay to conduct her 8th war patrol in the Bismarck-New Guinea-Truk area.
 Feb 15Gato sank a trawler off Truk.
 Feb 26Gato sank the transport Daigen Maru No.3.
 Mar 12Gato sank the cargo ship Okinoyama Maru No.3. Two other trawlers were destroyed by gunfire.
 Apr 1Gato returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 May 30On her 9th war patrol, Gato took Vice Admiral Charles A. Lockwood to Midway Island, completed photographic reconnaissance of Woleai Island, and served on lifeguard station for air strikes on Truk 11 to 18 June.
 Jun 22Gato terminated her patrol at Majuro Atoll.
 Jul 15Gato was underway on her 10th war patrol taking lifeguard station for the carrier-based air strike on Chichi Jima, during which she rescued 2 aviators.
 Sep 2Gato returned to Pearl Harbor, HI., then proceeded to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. for overhaul and then returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
1945Jan 28On her 11th war patrol, Gato patrolled the Yellow Sea as a unit of a coordinated attack group which included Jallao (SS-368) and Sunfish (SS-281).
 Feb 14Gato sank a coast defense ship.
 Feb 21Gato sank the cargo ship Tairiku Maru.
 Mar 1Gato returned to Guam, Mariana Islands.
 Apr 12Gato departed on her 12th war patrol, taking lifeguard station in support of the invasion of Okinawa.
 Apr 23Gato had a brief contest with two Japanese submarines and narrowly missed destruction as well-aimed torpedoes came close.
 Apr 30Between 27 and 30 April Gato rescued 10 Army aviators from shallow water near the beaches of Toi Misaki, Kyushu.
 Jun 3Gato returned to Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Jul 8On her 13th war patrol, Gato departed for lifeguard station for air strikes on Wake Island and then off the eastern coast of Honshu.
 Aug 15Gato received word of "Cease Fire", while making an attack approach on a sea truck.
 Aug 31Gato steamed into Tokyo Bay, remained for the signing of surrender documents on board Missouri 2 September.
 Sep 3Gato departed Tokoyo Bay via Pearl Harbor, HI. and the Panama Canal to the New York Naval Shipyard.
1946Mar 16Decommissioned. She served for a number of years as a naval reserve training ship at New York and later at Baltimore, Md.
1960Mar 1Struck from the Naval Register.
 Jul 25Gato was sold for scrap to the Northern Metals Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
