 Dec 23Launched.
1941May 23Commissioned with LCDR. Edward S. Hutchinson in command.
 Sep 8After shakedown in Long Island Sound, Grampus sailed to the Caribbean Sea with Grayback (SS-208) to conduct a modified war patrol.
 Sep 28Grampus returned to New London, CT.
 Dec 22The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor found Grampus undergoing post-shakedown overhaul at Portsmouth, NH., but soon ready for war, she sailed for the Pacific.
1942Feb 1Grampus arrived at Pearl Harbor, HI.
 Feb 8Grampus departed on her 1st war patrol. Sank an 8,636 ton tanker, the only kill of her short career, and reconnoitered Kwajalein and Wotje atolls, later the scene of bloody but successful landings.
 Apr 4Grampus ended her first patrol.
 May 1Grampus's second and third war patrols were marred by a heavy number of antisubmarine patrol craft off Truk and poor visibility as heavy rains haunted her path along the Luzon and Mindoro coasts. Both patrols terminated at Fremantle, Australia.
 Oct 2Grampus departed Fremantle, Australia on her 4th war patrol. Although she conducted a series of aggressive attacks on Japanese ships, receiving 104 depth charges for her work, Grampus was not credited with sinking any ships.
 Oct 18Grampus scored a direct hit on the Yura, but the torpedo failed to explode.
 Nov 23Grampus arrived at Fremantle, Australia.
 Dec 14Grampus departed on her 5th war patrol which took her across access lanes frequented by Japanese submarines and other ships. Although she conducted several daring attacks on the 41 contacts she sighted, Grampus again was denied a kill.
1943Jan 19Grampus returned to Brisbane, Australia.
 Feb 11In company with USS Grayback, Grampus departed Brisbane, Australia on her 6th war patrol from which she failed to return, the manner of her loss still remains a mystery today. 71 men lost.
