| Dec 18 | Pompano departed on her 1st war patrol, devoted mainly to reconnoitering the Eastern Marshall Islands for an aircraft carrier strike in January. |
| Dec 20 | Friendly (or, at least, American) planes from the USS Enterprise bombed Pampano in error, an experience which would become familiar to U.S. submarines, but she escaped damage.

| Feb 18 | Pompano sighted another tanker.Two hits slowed the Japanese down, but depth charging held Pompano down until her target had escaped. |
| Feb 28 | Pompano returned to Midway Island after reconnoitering Rongerik, Rongelap, and Bikini, |
| Mar 19 | Pompano departed Midway Island on her 5th war patrol. |
| May 5 | Pompano stopped at Midway Island. |
