1917Jul 30Keel laid down by the Lake Torpedo Boat Co., Bridgeport, CT.
1919Feb 15Launched.
1920May 25Commissioned with LCDR. William M. Quigley in command.
1921Jul 22After trials and outfitting, S-2 rendezvoused off Portsmouth, NH., with other S-boats of her division, SubDiv 18, and another division SubDiv 12, for what was, at that time, the longest cruise on record for American submarines.
 Jul 22(Cont'd.) They sailed via the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor, HI. and then on to Cavite, Luzon, in the Philippine Islands. Submarines which had previously served in the Asiatic Fleet had been carried over, tied to the decks of colliers.
 Dec 1The two divisions operated from the Cavite Naval Station during the 3 years following their arrival. They frequently visited Chinese ports at Shanghai, Chefoo, Chinwangtao, Tsingtao, Amoy, and Woosung during this period.
1924Oct 29Far East duty was terminated for the divisions and they departed for the West Coast of the United States. S-2, however, remained behind.
 Nov 5S-2's status was reduced to "In Commission, In Reserve". Retaining a partial crew for maintenance and readiness.
1928May 5S-2 was commissioned "In Full". S-2 spent the rest of May, June, and July in China, then resumed operations in the Philippines which she continued until ordered to return to Philadelphia, PA., for inactivation.
1929Apr 27S-2 departed Manila and sailed via Guam, Pearl Harbor, California, and the Panama Canal to the Naval Shipyard at Philadelphia, PA.
 Aug 5S-2 arrived at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, PA.
 Nov 25Decommissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, PA.
1931Jan 1Struck from the Naval Register.
 Sep 14S-2 was sold for scrap.
