Description
The Submarine Memorial located at the New Jersey Naval Museum. The memorial consists of a flag pole, torpedo and three plaques mounted on stones. The plaques honor: * The 52 boats, officers and enlisted men on eternal patrol from WW II * The USS GUDGEON SS-211, lost May 1944. She was the first US Navy submarine to sink an enemy combatant. GUDGEON is also the boat assigned by the USSVWWII to be honored by the state of New Jersey. * The eleven boats lost in peacetime (8 pre WWII plus SQUALUS, THRESHER and SCORPION). The latter plaque was presented by the New Jersey USSVI and the first two were presented by USSVWWII. Image and text contributed by Carl Hansen cjhansen@optonline.net
