USS Barbel SS-316 WWII Memorial
The USS BARBEL is memorialized at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the Chapel at Casper, Wyoming.
Description
Commissioned 3 April 1944; Sunk on 4th patrol by Japanese ASW off Palawan, 4 February 1945, all hands lost. Japanese aviators reported an attack on a submarine off southwest Palawan on 4 February. Two bombs were dropped and one landed on the submarine near the bridge. The sub plunged, under a cloud of fire and spray. This was very likely USS Barbel's last engagement. Barbel received three battle stars for her World War II service. The U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II assigned USS Barbel (SS-316) to the State of Wyoming.
