US Submarine Veterans WWII Memorial West
Located on the grounds of the Naval Weapons Station on US Submarine Veterans Hwy. Public Access
Description
Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach is the West Coast site for America's World War Two Submarine Memorial. Dedicated in 1977, this shrine pays tribute to the over 3,000 submariners who never returned from the War. The memorial includes plaques for each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost in that conflict, as well as additional plaques representing submarines lost in accidents during the Cold War. Comprising less than 2% of America's naval resources, submarines destroyed over 55% of all Japanese shipping. But they paid a heavy price. Of the 12,000 sailors serving in submarines during the war, one in four did not return. The World War Two Submarine Memorial is open daily to the public. It is free of charge, and no advance reservations are required.
