Memorial: Chief of the Boat Wally Bishop TMC (SS)
Chief of the Boat Wally Bishop TMC (SS)
Walter William Bishop TMC(SS) Chief of the Boat USS Scorpion SSN-589
Description
When you look at pictures, you'll notice there is no memorial stone with Wally's name on it. His wife, Theresa, decided that Wally would just want to be listed among the crew. And I am sure Wally would have agreed. Captain Sandy Levey was XO for three Scorpion Skippers and in a short talk he put together about Wally, he said the following. "Chief Bishop, by his demeanor and style, demonstrated the most perfect leadership I have ever beheld in an enlisted man in the Navy" As one of Wally's boys, who as he did with so many others, straightened me out and showed me how I could act to benefit the ship and myself; I agree wholeheartedly with Captain Levey. Wally was just the best person to work for, to be around, and to go to for help, that I have ever met. All my life I have used things that Wally taught me and they have always been the best way to handle anything that came up. It is fitting in some ways, that Wally was on the ship from before commissioning until the end. He was a large part of why the Scorpion was the outstanding ship it was. So Wally; from all those who knew and loved you, rest in peace friend. We will never forget you nor the sacrifice you and your crew made for all of us. Your name is listed along with the rest of the 99 in several places, but somehow when I look at one of the Scorpion Memorial Stones, yours is always the first name I see.
