Memorial: Submariners on Eternal Patrol
Submariners on Eternal Patrol
Memorial Stone at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery to honor all submariners who are on Eternal Patrol
Description
A memorial honoring U.S. submarine veterans on "eternal patrol" was carefully put into place Friday at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery. "It's beautiful," said 78-year-old Jim Gibson of Anderson, past USS Cuttlefish base commander of the U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. The concrete and marble memorial, which weighs about 2,400 pounds and required a crane to hoist it, was designed and created by the Anderson-based Outdoor Creations. Gibson and others had long sought to have a submariners memorial installed at the cemetery. He said the sacrifice of submariners to preserve America's freedom is beyond measure. "It behooves us to honor those who came before," he said. The memorial will be dedicated on April 4 in conjunction with the 108th anniversary of the purchase of the USS Holland, the first submarine in the U.S. Navy. Gibson said a Christmas wreath was to have been placed beside the memorial Saturday as part of the Wreaths Across America ceremony.
