In 1996, the Reading Chapter of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. decided to build a monument to honor all Submarine Veterans “Who gave their lives in the performance of their duties” and place it in City Park, in the city of Reading (Pennsylvania). City Park is for public use and includes at Veterans Grove Section where monuments dedicated to veterans from WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the women who served in the military already existed. Many people contributed to the building and funding of this monument however no state or government funding was provided. On Monday, May 26, 1997, Memorial Day, the monument was dedicated in a ceremony. Each year on Memorial Day a wreath is placed onto the monument to remember all those who lost their lives on submarines.
