The U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II assigned USS Dorado (SS-248) to the State of Kansas.
The Dorado is honored in the Veterans Memorial Park in West Wichita which contains a State "Wall" for the Vietnam vets, a Homefront Memorial, a USN Armed Guard Memorial (the only one we know of), a Merchant Marine Monument, a US Marine Corps Monument and more.
Just over four months after the launch, she was lost on her maiden operational voyage with all hands. The last ones to see this American submarine were the pilot, co-pilot and bombardier of a PBM aircraft attached to Patrol Squadron 210 out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
They last saw DORADO on October 12th, 1943--just before they dropped three Mark-47 depth charges and a 100-lb. Mark-4 Mod-4 demolition bomb on her.
This is one of two friendly fire sinkings of US Submarines in WWII.
