The U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II assigned USS Lagarto (SS-371) to the State of Wisconsin.
This memorial is located at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.
Lagarto was one of 28 submarines built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company during World War II. Lagarto was on its second war patrol when it sank just weeks before the end of the war in May 1945 in the Gulf of Thailand. In 2005 Lagarto was discovered sitting upright in 225 feet of water with a large rupture in the portside fwd area about where the Torpedo Room and Fwd Battery met, apparently from a depth charge.
